Short answer: AI visibility is measured across 4 layers: (1) Answer tracking — target queries are asked to ChatGPT/Gemini/Perplexity on a regular basis and the brand's mention and citation rate is recorded; (2) Bot traffic — GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot visits are monitored in server logs; (3) Referral traffic — sessions originating from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, and gemini.google.com are tracked in analytics; (4) Technical score — a GEO audit is run on a recurring schedule.
Layer 1: Answer Tracking (Share of Voice)
This is the AI equivalent of classic ranking tracking. How to do it:
- Build a set of 20–50 questions your customers would ask an AI ("best ikas agency in Turkey," "which company do you recommend for X," etc.).
- Ask each question in ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity monthly (weekly for competitive niches).
- Record three things: whether your brand is mentioned, in what position it appears, and which source it is cited from.
- Compare with competitors' mention rates and build an "AI share of voice" trend.
Citation sources are the most valuable output: whichever type of directory, list, or page the model recognizes you from, getting into more sources of that type is the fastest win.
Layer 2: AI Bot Traffic (Log Analysis)
Filter by user-agent in your server logs or CDN dashboard: GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended, CCBot. Growing bot visits are the first signal that your content is being crawled by AI engines; zero visits means you have a technical access problem (robots block, firewall, country block).
Layer 3: AI-Sourced Visitor Traffic
In GA4, build a segment on the source/medium report that includes the following referrers: chatgpt.com, chat.openai.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com. This traffic is usually small but carries very high intent — the user arrived based on an AI recommendation. Track the conversion rate separately; on most sites it is several times higher than the overall average.
Layer 4: Technical GEO Score
The technical foundation degrades over time: a new plugin changes robots.txt, a theme update drops structured data. Run the GEO audit tool monthly and log the score; any decline will show which criterion broke in the report.
